  • During the last nine years  the law and order situation in Sikkim remained  exemplary.

  • Sikkim included in the North Eastern Council

  • Nathula trade route reopened after a gap of half a century.

  • Massive administrative and financial power decentralization to  the Panchayatiraj Institution.

  • As per the decision taken  by the present Government 10  percent of the entire State Annual Plan budget is being transferred to the Panchayats who have been delegated with the financial power to utilize the amount for the development of their respective Panchayats.

  • Janta Mela, the biggest ever welfare package for the poor Sikkimese  has been  launched.

  • A number of stringent measures were taken to preserve and protect the fragile eco-system of this Himalayan State, like banned grazing of domestic animals in forest land, banned use  of non-biodegradable products, banned smoking in public place, launched Smriti Van  programme all over the State.

  • In recognition of his outstanding contributions towards preservation and protection of ecology  the Chief Minister of Sikkim,   Mr. Pawan Chamling, was  declared as the Greenest Chief Minister of India..

  • Sikkim became first State in the country to launch Hepatitis -B vaccination  programme for the children  of 0-1 year free of cost.

  • The literacy rate of the State is  more than 70 per cent.

  • The government  has accorded top priority to education sector. No tuition fees are levied in all government run schools and books and text books are distributed free of ,cost. Students  upto Class V are provided with free uniforms also.

  • Reservation of 33 per cent seats for women in Panchayats and  30 p.c. in government establishments.

  • Appointed the first  Woman Cabinet Minister,  Speaker of the State Assembly, Zilla Adhakshyas, Upadhakshyas, Chairperson  of  Sikkim Public Service Commission.

  • Govt. determines to make Sikkim an Organic State

  • Power Sector has been accorded a top priority by the present government. The Rangit  Hydro Electricity Project has already been commissioned   Construction of  Teesta Electric Hydro Project Stage V is  also in full swing.

  • A Ropeway at Gangtok linking Deorali with the Tashiling Secretariat has been commissioned.  Similar  projects  are in the offing at Namchi and Bulbuley Zoo complex Gangtok.

  • Constituted the State Planning commission  under the chairmanship of the chief Minister with well-known economists and seasoned administrators as its Members to oversee the developmental activities of the state.

  • 135 ft tall statue of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Patron saint of Sikkim has been built at Samdruptse in South Sikkim. Similar statue  of Lord Shiva  will be erected at Solophok in  South Sikkim. Work is on to construct Char Dhaam.

  • Infrastructure requirements of the judicial system  have completely met.

  • Constitution of Lok Adalats in all  nine sub-divisions.

  • Protection of Old laws of Sikkim.

  • Diversion of  70 p.c. of State Budget in development of  rural sector.

  • Implementation Rural Housing Scheme in letter and spirit.

  • 50 p.c. rebate  in electricity for rural house-holds.

  • Maintenance of strict financial discipline and fiscal borrowings.

  • Further rise in per capita income.

  • Inclusion of Tamang and Limboo Communities in the Scheduled Tribe

  • Grant of quota of seats for students belonging to other than reserved communities.

  • Grant of official language status to Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Sherpa,

  • Mangar, Newar and Sunar (Mukhia) languages and  their further development by teaching in schools. Official publication Sikkim Herald is also  being brought  in these languages .

  • Grant of old age pension of Rs. 200/- per month  to beneficiaries  above 65 years.

  • Framed Sikkim State Plan of Action  for Children.

  • A number of schemes  for the well being of the women are being implemented namely allotment of benefits to the women member of the family, Indira Mahila  Scheme, Balika Samridhi Yojana, small family schemes, widow remarriage scheme, pension to widows of ex-servicemen etc.

  • Sikkim became first State in the country to adopt and enforce the Forest, Environment and Wildlife Policy in 1999.

  • Developed numerous parks, gardens and landscaping of urban areas including places of tourist importance .

  • The core and thrust areas of the present government policies are infrastructure development with emphasis on improving road connectivity. A number of new roads were constructed and carpeting of the most of the roads are being done.

  • Mid-day meal are  introduced in all schools.

  • Smart school concept  has been adopted and more emphasis is laid on quality education. Along with infrastructural development of educational institution.

  • Sikkim can now boast of more than half a dozen colleges, including  Advanced Technical Centre at Bardang and Centre of Computers and Communication technology at Chisopani.

  • Computer education has been introduced in all secondary level schools and above. Equal emphasis in given  on vocational education.

  • Besides providing free medical facilities to the people, the  government is giving more emphasis on prevention of disease than curative aspect.

  • Sir Thutop Namgyal Memorial Hospital is being converted into an ultra modern hospital equipped with sophisticated and latest machineries  including  tele-medicine link with  All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New and STNM Hospital, Gangtok.

  • For effective public participation in rural development, the Sikkim Panchayat Act, 1993 was amended and State Election Commission was constituted and party based panchayat election was held in October 1997.

  • Reserved seats for women, SC/ST and OBCs in the Panchayatiraj.

  • In order to minimize the overhead burden being faced by the grass root level elected representatives, the State Govt. is paying a fixed monthly honorarium to all Zilla and Gram Panchayat members/

  • As a move to dignify the Panchayati Raj institution, the Adhyakshas and Upa-Adhyakshas were conferred the Status, of Minister of State and Deputy Minister with salaries and allowances.

  • Village Libraries have been established in all the Gram Panchayat Unites in the state by the S.D.F. Government with a view to encourage the Panchayat members to keep themselves abreast with the changing needs of time.

  • During the last nine years of  SDF Government a record number of promotions in services have been given to the employees of the State Government.

  • Helicopter services are there between Bagdogra airport and Gangtok and mountain flights are in operation for tourists. Helipads have been constructed in other parts of the State.

  • Construction  of Airport at Pakyong  is in full swing.

  • Constructed Temple cum Guest House at Bodh Gaya, Bihar.

  • In order to  promote village tourism thirty model villages  having all the basic civic amenities and modern facilities are  being constructed in different parts of the State.

  • Poor farmers  are exempted from paying toll tax for their products brought to bazaar for sale.

  • Free LPG gas connection  is provided to the family living below poverty line.

  • New Industrial Policy on the line of  North Eastern Industrial Policy extended  to Sikkim.

  • Physically handicapped  employees of government and public sector undertakings  are being paid conveyance allowance @ Rs. 100 per head.

  • Sikkim has been declared as Agri-Expo Zone.

  • Set up Regulated Market at Rangpo for the benefit of the farmers.

  • As a mark of tribute to the last monarch of Sikkim, the life size statue of Chogyal of Sikkim Palden Thondup Namgyal was installed at P.T. Namgyal Memorial Park at Deorali.

  • Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayyee, sanctioned Rs. 350 crores during his recent visit to Sikkim.

  • Traditional Lepcha House constructed at Namprikdang in Dzongu, North Sikkim.
