Keeping with the Sports
policy of the Government to broad base sports and to promote excellence, the
State Government decided to improve the physical infrastructure related with
sports. First and foremost improvement of the historic Paljor Stadium has been
undertaken.
Paljor Stadium, the main
stadium of the State, with its sandy pitch and wooden galleries, could
rightfully boast of a famous history. Here it was the annual derby between the
Sikkim Guards and the Kumar Sporting Club was followed with so much interest and
partisanship by the whole of the State. The ground has produced its share of
international players and the fastest men and women of Sikkim have competed and
run on ground. It is the ground on which the best teams in the country and
teams from abroad, to include a Poland versus Bulgaria match, have played. And
thus, it was logical that the people of Sikkim and itÆs sportspersons and women
dreamt of a stadiumùthe kind that would raise the level of play of our
sportspersons, giving the maximum scope to develop their talent and to enable
the State to host the biggest tournaments of the country and to make it a
contender for hosting international games. It is with this notion that the
Paljor stadium work has been undertaken by the State Government.
The construction of the
stadium has been taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.28.80 cores out of which
Rs.15.36 crores have been provided by the centre from NLCPR. The remaining
amount has been provided by the State Government. The stadium will accommodate
approximately 15,000 spectators and will have the dimensions required for
playing top class game and along with the grass surface, will fulfill conditions
for hosting national and international matches.
