Born on October 5, 1940 at Malbasey Village, Soreng Sub-Division, West Sikkim, Mr.Nar Bahadur Bhandari is the son of late Balaram Bhandari and Late Chandramaya Bhandari. He married Mrs. Dil Kumari Bhandari and has three daughters and a son. Mr.Bhandari had his early education at Soreng and Namchi and later graduated from the Government College, Darjeeling. As a student he took keen interest in students’ and youths’ welfare and engaged himself in various social and literary activities. He joined Sikkim Government service as a teacher in Soreng School and later served at Chakung School, Rongli Junior High School, Namchi Senior Secondary School and finally at West Point School, Gangtok. In 1974 during the pro-democracy revolution he resigned from service and joined politics. Mr. Bhandari alongwith a few like-minded associates then formed the United Independent Front and became its General Secretary. The Party unsuccessfully contested the first general elections held on the basis of adult franchise for the first time in Sikkim in 1974. He was arrested under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during Kazi Lhendup Dorjee’s Government and was kept in Behrampur Jail from 1976 to 1977. After his release, he formed the Sikkim Janata Parishad in October, 1977. Under his leadership, the Sikkim Janata Parishad took part in the general elections in 1979 and won 16 seats and with the support of Independent Sangha MLA, Rev. Lachen Gomchen Rimpoche formed his first Government. In May 1984 his government was dismissed allegedly on ground of corruption charges though he had majority support in the Assembly. Later he founded Sikkim Sangram Parishad and successfully fought the Lok Sabha elections in December, 1984 . In March, 1985, his Party fought the Assembly Elections under his leadership and came out with victory winning thirty out of thirty two seats. He once again became the Chief Minister for the second time. Resigned his seat in the Lok Sabha. which later went to his wife Mrs. Dil Kumari Bhandari uncontested. His Sikkim Sangram Parishad Party returned to power once again in 1989 with a clean sweep until he lost a vote of confidence in May 1994 in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly and resigned from the Government. Deeply interested in reading and writing he has a number of publications to his credit including ‘Hamro Pukar’. Edited ‘Aaj Ko Sikkim’ a bi-weekly and another literary journal ‘Archana’. He is a well known lover of sports particularly football, volley ball and badminton and is one of the best orators in Nepali speaking world. Nepali language received Constitutional recognition during his tenure and by the untiring efforts of Mrs. D.K. Bhandari-the then Member of Lok Sabha in August 1992.
